How we determine the size of knitted hats

Cum stabilim marimea caciulilor tricotateKnitting a hat as comfortable as possible is quite complicated. We need some experience in the field and knowledge of some 'secrets'. In the following I will present some requirements that must be taken into account.

Let's start with what is most important - the pattern of the hat, which greatly simplifies our work and helps us avoid knitting "blindly".

The base line in determining the size of head covering items is represented by the cranial circumference line. The measurement is taken from the forehead, at the level of the temples to the middle of the occipital area.
The centimeter is held tightly around the head.

The following measures are taken: the length between the top of the head (point M) and the front edge of the hat band (2) from behind (3) and from both sides (4). The last measurement is taken from the temples. In the same way, the distance between the ear lobe and the middle of the neck line is measured.
Measuring the distance from the top of the head to the front edge of the headband, it must be taken into account how the knitted article will be worn: the forehead will be covered or vice versa, found. According to this clue, measurements will be different.

We assume that we have taken the following measurements:
Cranial circumference line- 56 cm;
the length between the top of the head and the front edge of the hat band – 16 cm;
the length between the top of the head and the back edge of the hat band - 17 cm;
the length between the top of the head and the side edge of the hat band - 21 cm;
the distance between the ear lobe and the middle of the neck line -11 cm;

If we knit the hat according to this pattern, starting with the headband, that is, from the bottom up, dropping the stitches above the dotted line, we will get a cap that will be tight on the head, imitating his form.

When we make the pattern of a spherical hat, as convenient as possible, which covers the forehead 3-4 cm and 56 cm in size, the length of the pattern will increase by 8- 10 cm , of which 2-3 cm will be added to the distance between the earlobe and the middle of the neck, and the width of the print will increase by 3-4 cm.

After I made the pattern, the model is chosen, a control cap is knitted, after it, the number of stitches needed to make the actual hat is determined and how the stitches will be decreased, depending on the shape of the horse.

There are other secrets in knitting a hat:

  • The decrease of the stitches is done in the upper part of the hat, after a row, starting 8-10 cm from the top of the head;
  • For a spherical cap, the stitches are distributed over 6-7 stitches and one stitch is decreased at the end of each part of the stitch. For a tuguiata hat, the stitches are distributed on 3-4 rows. The fewer reductions are executed, the better the hat will be.
  • Spherical hats and 'cap' type hats will be knitted from wool with very thick yarn and yarn no. 5-6. This fact allows us to give the hats the correct shape and, in addition, the model made of thick yarn looks much more beautiful than those made of thin yarn.
  • Mohair knitted hats will have a fabric lining sewn on, or the mohair thread will be combined with a wool thread of the same color or a tonal one.
  • The berets will be knitted using a medium thickness thread and more flexible models will be used, "English headband" genre.
  • Crochet hats keep their shape for a long time. They are crocheted in a circle, from top to bottom or starting from the center.
  • The crocheting of many hats starts from the headband. It is complicated to start making the hat by calculating the number of stitches needed based on the number of stitches of the headband. The headband is elastic and stretches. That is why it is recommended to start crocheting the hat from the top towards the center, and the headband will be crocheted at the end.
  • If we use models that consist of vertical and wide lines, we must also take into account the headband of the hat. If this is sewn, it is possible that the model will be distorted.
